Caring For Your Board

Now that you have your board, there are some basics that you need to know and do to keep your board looking great and give you long serviceability.

Your board was finished in the woodshop with a series of food safe applications and mixtures of mineral oil, white beeswax, yellow beeswax and carnauba wax. Prior to shipping, it was treated with Odies Oil, a special food grade polymer – wax finish that further protects and enhances your board.

So, what do you need to do?

1.       Never place or wash your board in the dishwasher. The heat and steam will have catastrophic impact. Just ask my daughter. Don’t do it!

2.       Don’t leave your board in water (eg the kitchen sink) for more time than is necessary when cleaning. Doing so can cause glued boards to crack apart and can also result in some warping of the board. Again, just don’t do it!

3.       Be mindful of food acids that can cause a reduction in the protection provided by the oils and waxes in your board. Wipe away these food acids as soon as possible.

4.       Occasionally give your board a birthday by applying a top-up to the protection provided by the use of food safe oils and waxes. There are oils and waxes for boards available from most hardware stores and on-line. They vary in price from around $20 up to $140 and have different methods of application so be sure to read and follow the instructions carefully. Taittinger Wood has it’s own product. You should have received a small tin with your board. Larger tins are available for purchase on this site. For the Taittinger Wood treatment, clean the board and allow to dry completely. Apply the treatment and leave for around 10 to 12 hours, then buff off with a microfibre cloth.

5.       Taittinger Wood also offers a refurbishing service, dependent on the board condition. It is best to email peter@taittingerwood.com to discuss the viability of using the service. Please include photographs and a contact phone number.
